Actress Birkin asks Hermes to remove her name from croc bag.

Since its release in 1984, Hermes’ “Birkin Bag” — named after British-born “It”-girl icon Jane Birkin — has become synonymous with luxury, exclusivity and of course, fabulous style. PARIS Actress and singer Jane Birkin has requested Hermes to remove her name from one of many luxurious items maker’s best-selling luggage due to what she referred to as “cruelusli” crocodile farming and slaughtering practices. “I’ve requested Hermes to rename the Birkin Croco till they undertake higher practices that meet worldwide requirements for the manufacturing of this bag,” Birkin stated in a press release from her agent. Birkin stated she had signed actor Joaquin Phoenix’s Mercy For Animals petition to “shed unique skins from your wardrobe” in protest towards the “hundreds of thousands of reptiles slaughtered annually and became footwear, purses, belts and different equipment”. Barths and Rodeo Drive is the sound of a million socialites and celebrities inwardly screaming, as the status of their beloved Birkin bags is thrown into question, with just a few words from the bag’s namesake. “Having been alerted to the cruel practices reserved for crocodiles during their slaughter to make Hermès handbags carrying my name…

In its report published at the end of last year, PETA alleges that the Padenga Holdings crocodile farms that Hermes sources its materials from in Kariba, Zimbabwe, keep the animals in inhumane conditions. Birkin, a fashion icon, helped design the bag in 1984, when she was seated next to Hermès CEO Jean Louis Duma on an airplane; during the flight, she expressed frustration about not having the perfect bag for travel. She reportedly used the Birkin for years, even putting it to use in raising money for charity, but in 2006, Birkin told Vogue that she’d given up on it: “I will always love the Hermès bags but I have tendonitis so I had to search for something smaller.” At the time, Birkin noted that she was “always loyal to Hermès.” Well, those days are OVER!
