J.K. Simmons to Host ‘Saturday Night Live’ With D’Angelo

D’Angelo to make Saturday Night Live debut.

The character actor, known for his roles in films like Jason Reitman’s Juno and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man series, and on the television series Oz, has received critical acclaim for his recent portrayal of a disturbing, aggressive jazz instructor in the movie Whiplash, earning him awards galore including a nod from the Academy.

Simmons is going to host Saturday Night Live on January 31st and D’Angelo will be the musical guest in a rare TV appearance after releasing his first album (Black Messiah) in 14 years, according to SNL‘s twitter account. Simmons is, of course, known as a character actor and someone who is used to playing super serious characters on both sides of the good/bad divide, but he’s done some comedy as well with his voice work on BoJack Horseman, Juno, his great 2-episode run on Party Down, and his over-the-top J.

The actor has been around for a long time, with roles on Oz and Law & Order and he starred in Juno, but this is the first time he is finally getting his time in the spotlight.
