Israel, Lebanon Miss Universe contestants in spat over selfie.

Beauty contestant Miss Lebanon has defended herself against claims she posed for a selfie with Miss Israel during the latest iteration of the Miss Universe competition, saying that the latter “jumped in” to take the controversial picture. Earlier, photos circulated on social media showing Miss Lebanon Saly Greige surrounded by the beauty queens of Israel, Slovenia and Japan caused uproar back in her homeland, Beirut-based newspaper The Daily Star reported.

(AP Photo/J Pat Carter) The trouble started last week, when this year’s Miss Israel Doron Matalon posted a photo on Instagram featuring herself alongside Saly Griege, this year’s Miss Lebanon, and her fellow contestants from Japan and Slovenia. In 1993, the government disqualified its Miss Universe representative after Agence France-Presse moved a photo of her smiling arm-in-arm with her Israeli competitor.

I was having a photo with Miss Japan, Miss Slovenia and myself; suddenly Miss Israel jumped in, took a selfie, and put it on her social media.” Matalon responded with a Facebook post of her own, saying that Griege’s reaction “doesn’t surprise me, but it still makes me sad.” Addressing her rival, she added, “Too bad you can not put the hostility out of the game, only for three weeks of an experience of a lifetime that we can meet girls from around the world and also from the neighbouring [sic] country.” The New York Post reports that the Lebanese government has launched an investigation into the photo. One user tweeted: “You [Greige] could have avoided mingling with the Israeli contestant like previous Lebanese contestants have done throughout the years. Israel fought a bloody war against Lebanon’s Hezbollah in 2006, which killed more than 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and some 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers. And if you were harassed like you say, you could have at least avoided the huge smile [we see] on your face.” Some called for the Miss Lebanon title to be taken from Ms Greige.
