Adele has already sold 2.3 million copies of disc.

NEW YORK — Adele’s new album “25” has sold more than 2.3 million copies in the United States alone during its first three days on the market, a stunning number for a music industry that has seen sales steadily fall in the digital era.Music fans have been eagerly snapping up the award-winning British singer’s new album, whether through downloads or physical albums from bricks-and-mortar shops.Adele is on target to smash chart records for first-week sales, having sold 538,000 copies of ’25’ in the UK in the first 72 hours following the album’s release. To put that into perspective, only Taylor Swift’s “1989,” (released late last year) Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” (released in April) and Ed Sheeran’s “x’’ (in June 2014) have sold as much as one million copies all year so far.

The stats, revealed by the Official Charts Company, mean between its release on Friday and midnight Sunday, Adele sold 7,742 albums an hour, 124 a minute or just over two every second. Nielsen Music said Monday that Adele will almost certainly break the one-week record for album sales, set by ‘NSYNC in 2000 with 2.4 million for “No Strings Attached.” “There isn’t anybody that I’ve talked to in the music business who hasn’t been astonished by these numbers,” said Dave Bakula, senior vice president for industry insights at Nielsen. Meanwhile, retailers such as Target, which is selling an exclusive version of the album featuring bonus tracks, and Barnes & Noble have noted that the album’s opening-day sales made company history. On sales so far this week, ’21’ is set to return to number 12 in the album charts, up from number 29 last week. “This feels like such a long time coming, my new album is finally out. However, following the lead of Taylor Swift, British songstress Adele decided to snub streaming platforms – at least initially – by not making her album immediately available on services such as Spotify or Apple Music. Nielsen Music, which tracks record sales Friday through Thursday, will report its latest weekly figures on Nov. 26.

We’re working on it and hope we can change their minds soon.” A spokesperson for the streaming service added: “We love and respect Adele, as do her 24 million fans on Spotify. In contrast to the four albums that have topped one million in sales this year, there were 88 such discs in 2000, the year ‘N Sync had its big opening, Nielsen said (Sales records date to 1991, when then-SoundScan started keeping track of first-week sales). Adele has been making headlines for several weeks, at first teasing out 25’s release with a prime TV spot, online missives, music video debut, special appearances and interviews.

Her “1989” sold 1.3 million its first week on sale last year, the fastest seller in some time, and Bakula said Adele’s disc is likely to finish the week with more than twice that number sold. This past weekend, the campaign continued with several high-profile performances, including in a BBC TV special and an appearance as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Over the course of a week, the song was downloaded 1.1m times, almost doubling the previous record set by Flo Rida, who sold 600,000 downloads of Right Round in a week in February 2009. In the skit, a family was squabbling over politics at a Thanksgiving Day dinner, but when a girl put “Hello” on the stereo, everyone stopped arguing to sing along.

Meanwhile, the video for Hello – directed by French-Canadian film-maker Xavier Dolan – has been viewed more than 400m times and been parodied by people ranging from Sir David Attenborough to the Muppets.
