Hosting Miss Universe stirs excitement among pageant-loving Venezuelans in Doral.

French fashion expert and beauty producer Ines Ligron is very outspoken with her commentary on the Miss Universe 2014 candidates on her public Facebook page—and she has every right to be, having been National Director of the Miss Universe pageant in Japan for 10 years before retiring in 2010. The world’s most high-profile beauty pageant is taking place Sunday in a place that most Americans have never heard of – the small Florida city of Doral.BEIRUT: Miss Lebanon will not be stripped of her title or be punished over a selfie with Miss Israel during a Miss Universe event in Miami, Tourism Minister Michel Pharaon said Friday, offering her his support. “According to the information we obtained, Miss Lebanon [Saly Greige] did not have bad intentions that necessitates her being stripped of her title or punishment,” Pharaon said in a televised news conference. In homage to her country’s national sport, Chanel Beckenlehner, 26, marched onstage in a bedazzled hockey uniform, complete with hockey sticks arranged in the likeness of peacock feathers.

Taking inspiration from her country’s favourite national sport, her headdress was a full working score board and she accessorised with a cape fashioned out of ice hockey sticks. Photos circulated on social media over the past week showing Greige surrounded by the beauty queens of Israel, Slovenia and Japan caused uproar in Lebanon. Lebanon’s Al Jadid published a scathing report of the incident, in which they poked fun at Greige, and asked by the model, who once said she enjoys reading, failed to read a book explain that Israel is an enemy state. Meanwhile, Matalon flatly denied Greige’s explanation. “We took a group picture with Miss Slovenia, Miss Japan, and Miss Lebanon,” said Matalon. “She must have received criticism from fans in Lebanon after I uploaded it, and now she will not stand next to me in any situation, and now Miss Egypt is behaving the same way.” Lebanon and Israel remain in an official state of war, and though border incidents are rare since Israel fought a bloody war with Lebanese Shiite terror group Hezbollah in 2006, relations with Israel are frowned upon, and those crossing the border, even for cultural or personal reasons, are usually interrogated.

Other over-the-top costumes worn at the national costume competition included Miss Great Britain’s Queen’s Guard outfit, and Miss U.S.A.’s elaborate take on the stars and stripes. She named Mary Jean Lastimosa as one of the candidates to beat, calling her the Filipina’s self-introduction at the opening of the pageant “a much classier version” as opposed to many other candidates’ “embarrassing” screaming. Ligron also seems to have a soft spot for the Philippines as a nation, having packed two balikbayan boxes full of warm clothes for children who live in the mountains.

Boria, who left Venezuela with his family in 1989, settling in the Doral area, recalls campaigning for mayor about three years ago with the vision of making the place where he raised his children a destination city. “I always had the dream of Doral being on the global radar,” he said. “I have visions of Doral being a miniature Paris. Many residents complained when Trump’s golf course included barriers of palm trees that blocked some people’s scenic views. “When are we going to stop focusing on the glitz and glamour and refocus on what matters: fixing traffic, improving our schools, roads, and parks for our residents?” Councilwoman Christi Fraga said, according to published reports. “Enough is enough.” “In my humble opinion, as a businessman, it’s a good investment that Doral is making,” he said. “On Sunday, when the pageant takes place, we’ll have a lot of publicity around the world.
