Hey, This New Bieber Album Is Actually Kind of Good

American Music Awards 2015: Bieber, Miss Piggy, Clueless and 3 other things we learnt.

The 2015 American Music Awards took place in Los Angeles on Sunday night, and saw Taylor Swift win three awards, Jennifer Lopez hosting and yet another redemptive performance from Justin Bieber. Jared Leto introduced Dion and told the audience that his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, recently performed at the Bataclan, the Paris concert hall where 89 people were killed in the Nov. 13 attack.

Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor brought the lyrics of their song, “Marvin Gaye,” to life when they had a full-blown make-out session onstage after performing the tune. It was a revelatory moment: while Stefani released two singles last year, since her high-profile divorce from husband Gavin Rossdale in August, she has scrapped her previous comeback material and said she is working on more personal music. During performances from Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez, there was a sense of sisterhood among the young female performers at the Microsoft Theater. But some viewers found Stefani an anti-climax after she was introduced by Jeremy Sisto and Alicia Silverstone – otherwise known as Elton and Cher from Clueless.

With many pointing out that he is too young to appreciate ‘real music’ like Nirvana, it is highly possible that he may have heard Nirvana given their huge popularity and the existence of Spotify, iTunes, YouTube and CDs. The rare reunion of the cult teen film was charming, especially when the pair paid tribute to No Doubt, whose song Just A Girl featured in the 1995 Amy Heckerling movie.

In other news, Bieber has recently announced a new cover version of Smells Like Teen Spirit for his next album, which will feature a collaboration with Kanye West. But the performance took it up a notch for a splashy, rain-sodden version of Sorry, in which Bieber stood under a stage-wide shower and, some are claiming, mimed. Video evidence does suggest that the 21-year-old’s mouth was a considerable distance from the microphone at times, but the volume of his singing didn’t change. However, those celebrities in the audience, including Ariana Grande, didn’t seem to care – and nor, presumably, did Bieber, who had claimed his sixth number one album in the US and broke chart records in the UK over the weekend. The surprises weren’t just with the awards: Jennifer Lopez opened the show with a performance that highlighted her strong vocals when she sang a toned down version of her past hit, “Waiting for Tonight.”

The Texan a appella quintet Pentatonix were joined at the AMAs by John Williams’s orchestra (potentially inspiring the ire of a cappella purists) to sing recognisable themes from the Star Wars franchise. They returned last night, less than two weeks before the release of what’s rumoured to be their final album to play new song, Adventure of a Lifetime. They matched the elaborate stagecraft of other acts (The Weeknd performed around various equipment that was on fire) with a troupe of dancing gorillas – perhaps a nod to the now-infamous Left Shark of Katy Perry’s Super Bowl performance.
