HBO’s year-end video flashes new ‘Game of Thrones’ footage

‘Game of Thrones’ footage reveals … not much except Cersei’s stylish pixie cut.

Sure, that first Game of Thrones season six teaser all but answered a rather large question from last season’s finale, but it lacked any new footage. (The staff is divided on whether that’s an updated close-up shot of Bran, but we’re siding with no.) So for those clamoring for something, literally anything from the upcoming season, have we got a treasure trove for you: about three seconds of new footage from HBO’s 2015 Yearender piece.

It featured clips from “True Detective,” “The Leftovers,” “Silicon Valley,” “Veep,” “Girls” and, oh, yeah, a little show called “Game of Thrones.” At first glance, the video doesn’t seem like much – just TV highlights from the past year. The footage, too little to even make for a proper Vine, was sandwiched in a video posted Sunday touting the premium cable network’s successful 2015 and promoting what’s on tap for 2016. It’s not quite blink-and-you’ll-miss-it since a blink takes less than half a second, but it’s close — 10-blinks-in-quick-succession-and-you’ll-miss-it, for sure. So fans will have to be content with blink-or-you’ll-miss-it shots of a frazzled Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), a self-satisfied Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) hugging her sole surviving child, the boy king Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman). In less than 100 frames, we get to see three moments of the new season: Despondent Daenerys, Riding Ramsay, and Sweet Cersei matching haircuts with Tommon.

Fashionistas can note that Cersei has managed to find a way to remain looking as chic as ever with her hair in a pixie cut after having it cut off by religious zealots at the end of last season. Sorry folks, there’s no Jon Snow, but there’s a somber-looking Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Iwan Rheon as Ramsay Bolton and a close-cropped Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister (“Shame!” – sorry, habit) embracing her kingly son, Tommen Baratheon. HBO released a trailer last week comprised of a montage of death scenes including the Red Wedding, the beheading of Ned Stark and the grisly attack on Snow.
