J.K. Rowling Shares the ‘Harry Potter’ Family Origins.

Unveiled Tuesday, the newly redesigned site is designed to be “the digital heart of the Wizarding World” that the bestselling author first introduced in her blockbuster novel series and perpetuated with the series of hit films. “The Potter family is a very old one, but it was never (until the birth of Harry James Potter) at the very forefront of wizarding history, contenting itself with a solid and comfortable existence in the backwaters,” Rowling writes in a new entry about her famous character’s ancestry. In addition to exclusive Harry Potter secrets, the made-over site features updates on the upcoming spin-off, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and the 2016 London play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” It’s a known fact that Harry’s parents left him with a Gringotts’ vault full of gold.

She’s the success story of modern British literature and he’s the boy wizard who made her name – so it makes sense that JK Rowling is back in the Harry Potter habit. New writing by JK is at the core of the site which also features the never-before-seen article revealing the history of the fictional Potter family from its illustrious beginnings in the twelfth century. Linfred, according to Rowling, was a powerful potion master who created two potions, (Skele-gro and Pepperup Potion) which are still used in the modern wizarding world. Potter fans will soon have the chance to find out their true Patronus — a guardian, which takes the shape of an animal, and is cast to protect wizards.

But Rowling also goes into detail about Harry Potter’s ancestors and their wizardry, describing the first as a 12th century wizard named Linfred of Stinchcombe. “Linfred was a vague and absent-minded fellow whose Muggle neighbours often called upon his medicinal services,” she wrote. It was, Iolanthe explained to Hardwin, a tradition in her family that the possession of this cloak remained a secret, and her new husband respected her wishes. The new blog post starts by using Harry’s veritable wizard notoriety as a base for the reach into the past, and although she acknowledges that, Potter is a not uncommon “Muggle surname”, as a wizarding dynasty the name has always had some clout.

The site also promises news updates, insider information, sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes reports and glimpses of the new projects from a “Pottermore Correspondent.” Ron suspected that Harry’s cloak may be the same as that created by Peverell due to its good condition – traditionally Invisibility Cloaks wear out over time, and Harry’s had originally belonged to his father, James. The cloak was then handed down to the eldest in each new generation of Potters, which included Harry’s grandfather, Fleamont, and their son, James Potter. Following James’s death, at the hands of Lord Voldemort, Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore kept the cloak in his safekeeping until Harry enrolled at the school.
