Film review: Macbeth starring Marion Cotillard and Michael Fassbender.

The Oscar-winning actress, 39, plays Lady MACbeth in the gritty adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragic play, but she was unable to join her co-star Michael Fassbender on the red carpet for the unveiling at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland, reported Contactmusic. “We are really sad that Marion is not here (at the premiere).Until this week, I would have said Richard Loncraine’s Richard III with Ian McKellen and that bloody great big tank was my favourite “movie Shakespeare”, with honourable mentions for Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and Julie Taymor’s Titus. She is incredibly ill at the moment and extraordinary in the film so she feels just as bad not being here and celebrating her amazing performance,” said Justin Kurzel, director of the film. “I don’t think it’s the curse of MACbeth because she dealt with the curse many months ago.

The swordfights – of which there are many – are quick and gratifyingly bloody, with none of that daft and inauthentic parrying and prancing around Hollywood still seems to love. Marion Cotillard does similar justice to Lady Macbeth, here not so much the scheming power behind the throne, but also a victim of circumstance, grief and guilt. This is no modern “re-write”, just a lean and respectful retelling of the old yarn, with the internal engines of the story perhaps even better exposed by the cutting of a few extraneous moments and characters.
