Icelandic-born actor Gunnar Hansen, who achieved Hollywood notoriety as the masked, chainsaw-wielding killer in the cult 1974 horror film “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” died Sunday at the age of 68, The New York Times is reporting. The Icelandic-born actor first played the chainsaw-wielding slasher in 1974, after graduating from the University of Texas, where he majored in English and Scandinavian Studies.The cult horror film saw Hansen playing a murderous outcast, in which he wore a gruesome mask made of human skin from his victim and wielded a chainsaw. The movie’s final scene, where Leatherface maniacally spins his chainsaw over his head on a quiet country highway as his last victim escapes, is a classic among horror aficionados. Hansen’s character, Leatherface, “is one of the most iconic evil figures in the history of cinema,” the agent, Mike Eisenstadt, said in a statement.

Though he didn’t appear in the Texas Chain Saw sequels, he was cast in other horror films like Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Freakshow, Chainsaw Sally and Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre. In the movie, friends visiting their dead grandfather’s house are hunted nearby by Leatherface, a chain-saw wielding maniac who wears a mask of human flesh. Hansen worked as an actor, writer and director in Maine for nearly 40 years and at the time of his death was writing and producing a film called Death House. He played the role of bank-robbing Earl, in Mosquito, a science-fiction film that played homage to the 1950s horror with alien ships and giant mosquitos.
