‘The Imitation Game,’ Sam Smith among annual GLAAD award nominees.

British singer Sam Smith, historical thriller ‘The Imitation Game’ and the hit TV series ‘Transparent,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Orange is the New Black’ were among the nominees announced on Wednesday for 26th annual GLAAD Awards. The advocacy organisation said the equality and visibility of how the LGBT community is portrayed in the media has improved. ‘It has been a good year for LGBT media representation, particularly on television and for the transgender community,’ said Nick Adams, GLAAD’s director of communications and special projects. The noms for best limited-release movies include “Dear White People” (Lionsgate), “Life Partners” (Magnolia Pictures), “Lilting” (Strand Releasing), “The Way He Looks” (Strand) and “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” (Film Movement).

This year’s nominees, including expanded categories in Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series, reflect the widening diversity of LGBT images and storylines that are closing the gap to full acceptance,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a press release. GLAAD announced 144 nominees in 31 English and Spanish language categories for the awards that will be presented at ceremonies in Los Angeles on March 21 and New York on May 9. TV nominations include Amazon Studios’ Golden Globe winner “Transparent,” ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” “Looking” and “The Normal Heart.” GLAAD announced the nominations Wednesday.

The organization said that 52 comedy series and 83 drama series with regular portrayal of LGBT characters were considered, compared with a decade ago when GLAAD could only find eight comedy series and 17 drama series to consider. Smith, the “Stay with Me” crooner who recently went public with his new boyfriend on Instagram, was nominated for his critically acclaimed album In the Lonely Hour. (Smith leads this year’s Grammy nominations with six.) Also nominated was Amazon Instant Video’s hit Transparent – about a man seeking gender-reassignment surgery – which just won the Golden Globe for best TV series, musical or comedy (as did its lead actor Jeffrey Tambor). Smith is up against singer/songwriter Mary Lambert, folk singer Mary Gauthier, rapper Angel Haze and punk rock band Against Me! in the outstanding artist category. In the documentary category ‘The Case Against 8,’ about the landmark Supreme Case that overturned California’s ban on marriage, was nominated along with ‘True Trans with Laura Jan Grace,’ and ‘To Russia With Love,’ about the Sochi Olympic Games and the Russian LGBT community. ‘Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word,’ which follows the lives of seven transgender youths and Showtime’s ‘L Word Mississippi: Hate the Sin,’ about women living in the southern United States also got nods for outstanding documentary.
