Geeta Returns to India 13 Years After Wandering Across Border.

A mute and deaf Indian woman who strayed into Pakistan more than a decade ago finally returned to her home country on Monday to be reunited with the people she believes are her long-lost family. “We are elated to meet her. The story of Geeta, a Hindu woman in her early 20s, has captivated people in both countries at a time of heightened tension and border clashes between the nuclear-armed rivals. “Geeta — welcome home our daughter,” Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Twitter. Wearing a red tunic, her head loosely covered with a matching stole, Geeta, now 23, waved to the schoolchildren and others who had gathered to see her after her arrival.

We thank both the countries for their efforts to unite Geeta with the family,” Vinod Kumar, who says he is her brother, said as he waited at the airport to greet her. Geeta arrives in New Delhi accompanied by members of Edhi Foundation.” Geeta was 11 or 12 when she crossed one of the world’s most militarised borders from neighbouring India.

She would point at maps of India, especially to an area in the south of Jharkhand State until she was able to finally communicate she was from India, not Pakistan. The government has also identified two welfare homes for people with disabilities, and Geeta could be sent to one of them if the DNA tests are not conclusive, Swaraj said.

Wearing a traditional red outfit with her head covered by a loose scarf, she smiled and waved to television cameras after leaving the airport in the Indian capital. “Geeta stayed with us for 13 years. Her long-awaited return comes after Geeta indicated earlier this month that she recognised a photograph of a family from the eastern state of Bihar sent to her by Indian authorities. After repeated false leads in the effort to find her family, Geeta’s story received a publicity boost in August when a Bollywood film with a similar plot became a smash hit.
