Game of Thrones’ Sansa Stark is Jean Grey in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse marches on. The director of the new X-Men film tweeted that Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp have all been signed up for the next instalment in the franchise. The 18-year-old actress plays Sansa Stark in the HBO fantasy series, and will now turn her hand to the role of telepathic mutant Jean Grey in Bryan Singer’s Days of Future Past follow-up.

The director announced late last night that he had casted Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops — roles originally held by Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, and James Marsden, respectively, in the original X-Men trilogy. As Apocalypse is a prequel to the original films, the actors will play younger versions of the mutants – Game Of Thrones star Sophie will be Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey, Mud’s Tye will take on James Marsden’s Scott Summers or Cyclops, and Alexandra, who starred as Aaliyah in a TV biopic, is confirmed for Halle Berry’s old role as Ororo Munroe, or Storm. Singer announced the news on Twitter this morning, also confirming that House of Anubis’ Alexandra Shipp and The Tree of Life’s Tye Sheridan will star as Storm and Cyclops respectively. While James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique will be the main focus of the film, it isn’t clear yet whether Bryan is lining up the new generation cast to take over as the main stars in future releases.

The three new cast members join Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult and Oscar Isaac on the third rebooted X-Men instalment. Earlier this week, Sir Patrick Stewart confirmed that he and Sir Ian McKellen would not be involved this time as the older versions of Professor Xavier and Magneto. Comments that are judged to be defamatory, abusive or in bad taste are not acceptable and contributors who consistently fall below certain criteria will be permanently blacklisted. Rounding out the trio is Alexandra Shipp (Straight Outta Compton, Aayliyah: The Princess of R&B) as Storm, who, at this point, we ‘d like to let the reader know is actually really cool in the comics (as opposed to her previous portrayal in the film series).
