David Beckham scores a first as 2015 Sexiest Man Alive.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — British soccer star David Beckham has been an international sex symbol for nearly two decades, but he says he’s still flattered to be named People magazine’s 30th-anniversary Sexiest Man Alive. “It’s a huge honor,” the 40-year-old Beckham told the magazine, which announced its choice on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Tuesday night. “I’m very pleased to accept,” he said. The Huntsman: Winter’s War hunk is obviously just as good looking now as he was circa 2014, but that didn’t stop co-star Jessica Chastain from having a little good-natured fun at his expense. But the father of four insists he doesn’t think of himself as being all that hot. “I never feel that I’m an attractive, sexy person,” Beckham told People — presumably with a straight face. I know how much this title meant to you.” The 32-year-old Australian actor took the jibe in jest, of course. “Thank u @jes_chastain for your kind words & timely reminder that I’m now over the hill,” he responded. “Although I knew for the last 12 months this day would come, it still hurts.

But, despite some very qualified candidates — from Michael Jordan to Tom Brady — and impassioned online endorsements from fans, athletes have failed again and again to make the final cut. “People magazine doesn’t necessarily cater to a sports-minded audience,” Morgenstein says. “Their audience tends to be 35- to 55-year-old suburban wives and moms. Chastain quickly reassured her co-star he wasn’t completely old and washed up just yet. “Don’t sweat it Chris,” she tweeted. “You have an A+ personality and that’s all that matters! ; )” They are not necessarily tapped into sports as a primary focus of their life.” Beckham, 40, is a British former soccer star (he retired in 2013) and arguably the first fully bearded winner. Beckham appeals to People readers not as an athlete but as a pop culture icon who’s married to a former Spice Girl (Victoria Beckham), has modeled in high-profile underwear campaigns, and has been photographed frequently with his four adorable children, Morgenstein says. “He’s now become a family man,” Morgenstein says. “He’s become a person many women can respect, not just for being good-looking, but he’s a great dad, he’s a great person. I think that was a breakthrough for Brad Pitt as well.” “What makes David poignant is, even with all the success, he — at least from what we know — hasn’t strayed and has stayed a very solid husband and family man,” he says. “It’s the definition of sexy, right?
