First look: Jared Leto’s flamboyant ‘Suicide Squad’ Joker, from green head to toe

Hanging out with Jared Leto’s Joker sounds like it was awful.

Everybody’s very excited about Suicide Squad, so much so that it’s easy to forget there’s a little film starring Batman and Superman on the way (well, not that easy to forget).Jared Leto was the only character from the new DC Comics film not to appear in the first official cast photo, but now he can be seen in full villanous glory on the cover of the December issue of Empire magazine.Ever since we got our first glimpse of Jared Leto’s Joker, there’s been speculation about just how far into the role Leto would disappear, as he’s famously submerged himself into characters in the past, including the one for which he won an Academy Award. (Well, most of our speculation involved wondering what the Joker’s routine for daily chest and armpit hair removal entailed—possibly a day spa, because he deserves to pamper himself?—but after that, it was the method-acting thing.) Well, according to a new interview with Empire accompanying his cover photo, Leto basically refused to break character during the shoot. The Batman villain was last portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, who was posthumously awarded the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in The Dark Knight.

Unlike Heath Ledger’s Joker – known for his tattered purple tailcoat suit with faded green waistcoat and lilac shirt – Jared’s is far more… glamorous? ‘There was definitely a period of…detachment,’ the 43-year-old explains.’I took a pretty deep dive. The 43-year-old actor stars opposite Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne and Viola Davis (just to name a few!) in the movie about DC Comics’ villains, which is due out Aug. 5, 2016.

Actor Jim Parrack, who plays Joker henchman Johnny Frost, got the worst of it, as Leto would randomly call him during the day demanding he spray paint some roses black or fill a backpack with nine inch nails. This is the first time we’ve had a good look at his chest, which seemingly has “Joker” written on it in capitals, with a creepy smile underneath. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is rumoured to star Leto’s joker in some capacity, opens in cinemas 25 March 2016, while Suicide Squad will reach cinemas 5 August 2016. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my pr**k hole.’ He also spoke about how he wanted to portray the comic book villain: ‘I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. For instance, Jared Leto now knows what it would feel like to give birth through his penis, only he calls it his “prick hole,” because Jared Leto is gross.

The actor posted a picture of himself being pulled over on Sunday night, writing, “Uh oh “whatchu gonna do when they come fo’ you” #popo #icantdrive55.“ He views the Joker as a bit of an old soul, sort of the way that guy you knew in high school who only hit on girls younger than himself would always tell them he senses they’re an ”old soul,” just like him. The cool-down period from all those rules that Leto broke is now in its infancy, so we should probably wait 20 years or so to check back in and see how it’s going then.
