Divergent Series Final Two Films Names are Allegiant and Ascendant.

Lionsgate has retitled the final two films of its “Divergent” franchise, “The Divergent Series: Allegiant — Part 1” and “The Divergent Series: Allegiant — Part 2.” The third film in the Shailene Woodley franchise is now going by the name “The Divergent Series: Allegiant” and is scheduled to open March 18, 2016. Based on author Veronica Roth’s New York Times best-seller, Allegiant is being directed by Robert Schwentke from a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim and Adam Cooper & Bill Collage and Stephen Chbosky.

Both movies are based on Veronica Roth’s “Allegiant,” the third novel in her “Divergent” trilogy, which begins with the Faction system being dismantled. I lost a good deal of interest in the Divergent films after Insurgent and haven’t been particularly hopeful about Allegiant considering the quality of the source material, but this title change could be a sign that the writers are making the appropriate alterations. Both films are also getting new taglines: Allegiant’s new tagline is “break the boundaries of your world,” while Ascendant promises that “the end is never what you expect. They come to learn that they are part of an experiment to heal the post-apocalyptic Earth they live in. the two also learn that they could have left the wall that surrounds the ruins of Chicago at any time they like.

Well, basically, it means there are going to be some changes, but it’s really too early to know exactly what those changes will be or the extent of them. The third installment in the action adventure series stars Golden Globe nominee Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Academy Award victor Octavia Spencer, and the Oscar-nominated Naomi Watts.

Readers were so incensed that Roth felt compelled to write a lengthy defense of her ending shortly after the book’s release: “I thought about reaching out with my authorial hand and snatching her from that very bad situation”. The Divergent Series follows Tris (Shailene Woodley), who lives in an oppressive society where citizens are defined and categorized by personality type.

Though Roth points out that it’s still too soon to say what form those changes might take — Ascendant doesn’t hit theaters until March 24, 2017 — if you’ve read her series, it’s tough to keep from wondering whether the films might decide to throw out Allegiant’s original, bleak ending for something a little more, well, Ascendant. The main characters might not also have a happy ending, but fans can only wait and see if the movie adaptation stays true to the books or gives its own unique version.
