Best Artists Of 2015.

MTV is out with its list of 2015’s top musical artists, and Adele only made it to No. 7 despite selling more than twice as many albums as anyone else this year. While reigning stars like Taylor Swift and Drake further tightened their grip on existing mainstream chokeholds, there was still plenty of room for undeniable rising stars like Fetty Wap and Tori Kelly to make grand introductions, and an audience waiting for cult-favorites like The Weeknd and Future to elevate to pop star status.

Coming off a rocky couple of years, Biebs pulled off a miracle by silencing naysayers with his Purpose album, while Adele swept in during the ninth hour to make history with 25. The No. 2 album in sales, Swift’s “1989,” has sold just under 1.8 million copies for all of 2015, the Nielsen company said. “There’s a strong argument that (Adele) could be No. 1, and we welcome that back-and-forth,” said Eric Ditzian, MTV’s senior news director. “We wanted to take into context all of 2015.” Besides sales, MTV considers streams, impact on pop culture and an artist’s contact with fans through social media in its decision. Rounding out MTV’s top-five best songs were “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd, Lamar’s “Alright” and “Shut Up & Dance” by Walk the Moon. It’s a coup for Chicago, because the city has lured the hottest stage show in years and beaten a rival theater town where it might play well, too — Washington, D.C.

Adele’s “Hello” was everywhere for the past month, but ranked No. 2 to Drake for best song. “Hotline Bling” was “inescapable in a very good way,” Ditzian said. It’s got a terrifically varied score, ranging from pop ballads to sexy R&B to rap battles, with lyrical nods to Gilbert and Sullivan, Jason Robert Brown, “South Pacific” and the Notorious B.I.G. Members of the California rock band Eagles of Death Metal on Tuesday revisited the ravaged Paris theater where they survived a massacre by Islamic extremist suicide bombers.

The band made a surprise return to Paris and performed with U2 on Monday night, their first onstage appearance since the Nov. 13 attacks that killed 130 people in Paris. This time, actress-singer Abigail Breslin will play the lead role of Baby. “Dirty Dancing” tells the song-and-dance story of a young woman in the early 1960s who vacations with her parents in the Catskill Mountains and falls for the resort’s working-class dance instructor, who in the original film was played by Patrick Swayze. ■ Kathy Griffin is ready to make waves as the first comedian to perform on Carnival Cruise Line ships.

Tickets for Griffin’s Carnival shows start at $40 for general admission. ■ Rumored new couple Selena Gomez and Niall Horan were spotted enjoying amusement rides and playing Boardwalk games over the weekend at the Santa Monica Pier in California. Gomez, 23, and Horan, 22, were also spotted smooching just one day before at Jenna Dewan Tatum’s 35th birthday blowout in Hollywood. ■ Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas’ marriage is officially over.
