Charlie’s Angels is apparently getting a reboot courtesy of Elizabeth Banks.

Sony is rebooting the famous “Charlie Angels” franchise with actress-director Elizabeth Banks in negotiations to direct the new version. (Source: Reuters/Still) Banks, 41, who made her directorial debut with “Pitch Perfect 2”, will also produce the project under her Universal-based Brownstone production company, said The Hollywood Reporter. The iconic franchise which was first a television series in the 70s (before it received the big screen treatment in 2000) is set to hit the box office once again.

“Charlie’s Angels” launched in 1976 on ABC and lasted five seasons with Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith portraying private detectives working for a benefactor named Charlie.Marvel has yet to put a woman in charge of one of its films, but that’s not stopping anybody else from stepping into 2015: Sony is in negotiations with Pitch Perfect 2 director Elizabeth Banks to handle a reboot of Charlie’s Angels. The film is based on the 1970s TV series starring Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson as private eyes working for the mysterious, unseen Charlie Townsend.

The sequel divided critics and fans, but it raked in nearly $70 million at the US box office, giving her the second-largest opening ever for a female director. That film upended all expectations, nearly tripling the domestic box-office of the original and instantly putting Banks on the map as a director to watch. The property got an infusion of female empowerment energy in its big-screen treatment in 2000, when Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu starred in the action comedy hit directed by McG. Hollywood has been shockingly incapable of waking up to the fact that there are strong female filmmakers who aren’t named Kathryn Bigelow, but there are signs that is slowly, painfully, incrementally beginning to change.

With Charlie’s Angels, Banks would potentially be kicking off an entire franchise, one that mixes action with the comedic skills she’s excelled with both in front of and behind the camera. Banks, who has demonstrated a gift for comedy and drama as an actress, has also shown an affinity for female empowerment projects as the steward of the Pitch Perfect franchise. Actresses Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson have already confirmed they are returning for the third Pitch Perfect, but Banks’ involvement is yet to be confirmed.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige has been insinuating that both things would be changing with the upcoming Captain Marvel and Black Panther — Selma director Ava DuVernay did in fact meet on the latter film — but as of yet nothing has been announced. That’s to say nothing of the Star Wars franchise, which thus far has announced six directors for five different movies — all of whom are incredibly talented, but look awfully the same.
