Eagles of Death Metal singer: A child survived by hiding under my jacket.

A young concertgoer’s life was spared in the Bataclan massacre thanks to Jesse Hughes’ leather jacket, the Eagles of Death Metal lead singer revealed in his first interview since the shooting that left at least 89 dead.

The American rock band were about an hour into their sold-out concert when gunfire soared over the music — as three terrorists transformed a fun night of music into a nightmarish scene of carnage. “The killers were able to get in and kill every one of them except for a kid who was hiding under my leather jacket,” Hughes, the band’s frontman, told Vice. Hughes and the band’s drummer and co-founder, Josh Homme, who also fronts Queens of the Stone Age, escaped from the bloodbath unharmed — but lost many fans and at least four employees. Their merchandise manager, Nick Alexander, as well as three people from their record label — Thomas Ayad, Marie Mosser and Manu Perez — were all slaughtered in the concert hall. The band has largely been silent since the Nov. 13 attacks that killed 130 and injured more than 350 as a series of bombings and shootings unfolded across Paris with the worst bloodshed at the Bataclan. “A great reason why so many were killed is because so many people wouldn’t leave their friends,” Hughes told Vice in the snippet of a longer interview that will be released later this week. “So many people put themselves in front of people.” Two suicide bombers who were holding dozens of concertgoers hostage in the building detonated their explosive s-laden vests after a tense hour of negotiations where they rambled about Syria and asked to speak to the media. “While the band is now home safe, we are horrified and still trying to come to terms with what happened in France,” they said in Facebook statement Wednesday along with a reinvented image of their Peace, Love and Death Metal album that featured the French flag.
