Donald Trump Eyes Sale of Miss Universe to WME/IMG After Settling with NBCUniversal.

Donald Trump is in negotiations to sell the Miss Universe Organization to WME/IMG now that he has bought out NBCUniversal’s half of the company and settled a lawsuit with the Peacock that arose over this year’s Miss USA pageant telecast. In the wake of the Republican presidential candidate’s controversial claim during his 2016 campaign launch in June that undocumented Mexican immigrants are “rapists” and “criminals,” NBCUniversal, mnsbc’s parent company, cut business ties with Trump, putting the Miss Universe/Miss USA series’ future in question.

Trump declared his former employer to be in breach of contract and his lawyer, Alan Garten, told CNN that Trump would be “taking action against NBC” and pointed out that there was “no morals clause” in the Celebrity Apprentice contract. “I think they are weak,” Trump said of NBC in an interview with Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly in June, “and I think they are afraid of the issue at the border.” After a separate cancellation of his pageants, Trump also filed suit against Univision on 30 June and went out of his way to publicly humiliate the network’s top news reporter, Jorge Ramos, in a press conference in August, telling him to “go back to Univision”.

The purchase of Miss Universe would be in keeping with WME/IMG’s strategy of expanding its reach in entertainment into content ownership and live events, to complement its strengths in sports and fashion.
