Bowie reveals details of 25th album ‘Blackstar’, due January 8.

The eccentric English glam rocker will reportedly release a “completely bonkers” new seven-track album called “Blackstar” on Jan. 8, his 69th birthday. The Times has reported details of the new release today (October 24), with the paper describing the work as possibly his “oddest yet” and “completely bonkers”.Little else is known about the album, but a snippet of one of his new songs (also called Blackstar), appeared online recently and we can safely assume it will be included.

Recorded at the Magic Shop studio in New York with local jazz musicians, Blackstar may well be the odd-est work yet from the 68-year-old singer and eternal chameleon. Its 10-minute-long title track includes “Gregorian chants, a soul section (and) various electronic beats and bleeps,” according to the Times of London.

German electro pioneers Kraftwerk are referenced as a point of comparison, along with jazz influences. 2013 release ‘The Next Day’ marked Bowie’s return after a ten-year recording absence, while he recently released new music in the form of a TV theme, for the show ‘The Last Panthers’. The title track will have a running time of ten minutes, and The Times reports that Bowie will decline to provide a radio edit, instead presenting the single as ‘all or nothing’.

But every time I see him now, before I even speak to him, he goes, ‘I’m not touring’ and I say, ‘I’m not asking’,’ John told Music Week recently. The track will also be featured in Bowie’s upcoming Off-Broadway musical, “Lazarus,” inspired by the 1963 sci-fi novel “The Man Who Fell to Earth” and its 1976 screen adaptation starring Bowie. The “Space Oddity” singer’s fans can expect “long, jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by ’70s German bands Can and Kraftwerk” on his upcoming 25th album, writes the Times. Bowie has released a series of re-issues over the past year, including a large box set spanning 1969-1973 and a number of 7″ singles in special edition.
