Chloe Moretz Will Flip Her Fins in The Little Mermaid.

The 18-year-old Kick Ass star is set to play the title character in the feature adaptation from Universal Studios and Working Title, Variety first reported Friday.Richard Curtis is in talks to write the script based on the the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale centering on a mermaid who gives up her life in the sea after she falls in love with a prince.Universal’s live-action adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale The Little Mermaid — which will have no relation to the Disney animated musical version — has its Little Mermaid (Disney also came up with the name Ariel, so who knows what her name will be!).

The film, which previously was to be directed by Sofia Coppola, is now without a director after Coppola exited due to the old “creative differences” song and dance. Moretz’s upcoming credits include Neighbors 2 and YA adaptation The 5th Wave, along with November Criminals with Ansel Elgort and Broad Green’s Brain on Fire. She’s repped by WME, T Squared Entertainment and Sloane, Offer,

Since the project is not yet dated, execs felt it was smarter to take one more pass at the script with a top-level writer in order to attract the type of talent they want for the project. As Variety reports, she wasn’t too keen on casting a major star to lead the film, despite having Kirsten Dunst and Emma Watson spearheading her past works. One of those was rumored to be casting the lead role — Coppola had reportedly wanted to approach a newcomer while Universal was actively courting Moretz.

Moretz had been the frontrunner for the role even while Coppola was still attached; some insiders point to Coppola’s unwillingness to go with a star like Moretz as her impetus for parting ways with the project. It all means that this project is still coming together at Universal, while a few miles up the road Disney cranks out project after live-action project tied to its classic animated films.

And while they’ve yet to fill the director’s chair, they’re currently attempting to nab Love Actually screenwriter Richard Curtis to adapt the story. Moretz is currently filming “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” for Universal after having just finished “Brain on Fire.” She can be seen next in Sony’s “The Fifth Wave” and also has “November Criminals” set to bow next year.
