Chewbacca campaigns for Darth Vader in Ukraine, gets handcuffed by police (VIDEO).

Sunday it seems is not the best day for calls to join the dark side in Ukraine, as the country goes to polls and any campaigning is forbidden. A statue of Bolshevik revolutionary Vladimir Lenin in Ukraine’s Odessa has been converted into a monument to Darth Vader — the city’s response to a law requiring the eradication of Communist Party symbols.

The monument, located in the compound of an Odessa factory, was modified by artist, designer and animator Oleksandr Milov, and made its debut on October 22.The original statue was ordered destroyed under the country’s new decommunization law, but workers at a nearby factory requested that the statue be redesigned. The Lenin statue was destined to be dismantled, but instead, Odessa — a Black Sea port city renowned for its cultural diversity and flippant sense of humor — chose to transform the monument, unveiling the new Darth Vader statue Friday, local Dumskaya.net news portal reported. “The first monument on planet Earth to the Sith Lord, the supreme commander of the Imperial Fleet, Darth Vader, has appeared in Odessa,” Dumskaya.net said in its report. Until recently, the statue faced demolition as part of a “decommunisation” process, which has seen symbols of the countries’ communist past systematically effaced. “After the de-communisation law was adopted earlier this year, we had to decide what to do with the monument [of Lenin],” Mr Milov explained, the ABC reports. While most communist relics will be removed or destroyed, this particular Lenin statue has been repurposed. “The bronze Lenin was left inside, so that the grateful or not-so-grateful descendants could exhume him, if needed,” Milov is quoted as saying by Ukraine Today.

The Darth Vader likeness, created by renowned Odessa sculptor Alexander Milov, maintains the classic pose struck by Lenin in Soviet-era monuments, with the left hand clenched into a fist and bent at the elbow in front of the chest. For many Ukrainians, Lenin is a symbol of Russian’s totalitarian reign, which officially came to an end with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Last year, a number of political candidates dressed as Darth Vader during their campaigns for the mayorships of Odessa and the country’s capital, Kiev. The imposing “Star Wars”-inspired statue stands outside of a factory where workers had asked that the outgoing sculpture be redesigned rather than destroyed.

The monument decorates the yard of a local plant, Pressmash, the site of the original Lenin statue, and its transformation was at the request of plant employees and residents of nearby buildings and a workers’ dormitory, Dumskaya.net reported. Mr Milov purportedly has plans to install a WiFi router in the Sith lord’s head, so that he can “communicate with other Siths” – a tongue-in-cheek reference to Vader’s telepathic abilities.

The original plaster sculpture of Lenin had fallen into disrepair after decades of weathering the elements, prompting the sculptor to first fortify the monument with a protective layer. He also said he failed to cast his own vote as he was missing from lists of people entitled to cast their ballot – despite the fact he has a Ukrainian passport, issued for Darth Alekseyevich Vader. Its new “Darth Vader parts” have been made of a titanium alloy and “attached to the leader of the world proletariat” with a glue used in the space industry, Dumskaya.net reported.

Ukrainians are casting ballots in a poll that is viewed by many as a confidence vote for the ruling coalition, which has lost much of its popularity following 20 months of economic hardships. Odessa’s new sculpture has be outfitted with a useful technological feature — a wireless router planted within Darth Vader’s head will provide wireless Internet to passersby, Dumskaya.net reported..

In Kiev, a station where President Petro Poroshenko voted opened late because the chair of the election commission lost the key to a safe, which contained the ballot papers. And in the village Libokhora near in the Lvov Region, commission members asked voters to cast ballots in different boxes depending on who they voted for.
