Abuse case dropped against Casey Kasem’s widow: documents.

There is insufficient evidence to charge Casey Kasem’s wife with elder abuse or neglect in connection with the death of the famous disc jockey, the Los Angeles County district attorney said Friday.

The document, obtained by the Daily News, recounted the bitter battle between widow Jean Kasem and her stepdaughter Kerri Kasem over the last two years and confirmed Kasem’s health took a turn for the worse when his wife removed him from a Santa Monica nursing home against medical advice on May 7, 2014. Shortly after authorities located Kasem with his wife in the Seattle area, Kerri visited, found that he looked “weaker” and had him taken to a hospital for an evaluation, prosecutors confirmed. Tensions between his wife and children worsened when, according to his daughters Kerri and Julie, they were unable to visit him in the summer of 2013.

From December of 2013 to May of last year, Kasem was in the Berkeley East Convalescent Hospital until Jean Kasem removed him because of what she said were privacy concerns. Doctors said Kasem, who suffered from Lewy Body Dementia, was dying and recommended that Kerri and her siblings withhold artificial nutrition and hydration. “We have tried everything to keep him alive. It was excruciating to watch,” Kerri, 42, told The News shortly before her dad’s death. “We did everything we could to save my Dad at the end of his life, including getting an emergency court order for conservatorship. But we were too late,” the statement said. “My father’s second wife Jean had done everything she could to keep our father from us while not providing the quality care that he — and every other senior in our society — deserves.” She also expressed hope that a case could be prosecuted against Jean in Washington state, where she says her “father was taken against his will and later died.” Best known for her roles in “Ghostbusters” and the sitcom “Cheers,” Jean took custody of Kasem’s remains shortly afterward and claimed on his death certificate that she and the radio star lived in Jerusalem.

Kerri Kasem on May 12, however, was awarded temporary conservatorship of her father and two days later filed a missing person’s report with the Santa Monica police.
