Caitlyn Jenner Legally Declared a Woman.

On Friday, three months after Caitlyn Jenner introduced herself to the world on the groundbreaking cover of Vanity Fair, a judge approved the Olympic champion’s request to legally change her name and gender.

According to the Associated Press, the 65-year-old requested the change to ”better match my identity.” Superior Court Judge Gerald Rosenberg granted the petition to call Jenner “Caitlyn Marie” instead of her birth name, “William Bruce,” after Jenner submitted a medical declaration and passed a background check. Earlier this year, Jenner granted V.F.’s Pulitzer Prize–winning contributing editor Buzz Bissinger unprecedented access to her life for the magazine’s landmark feature. Jenner won a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1976 Olympics and was married to Kris Jenner, mother to the Kardashian sisters, for more than 20 years. Without knowing the clinical term for what he was feeling—gender dysphoria—he found himself “fascinated by it all,” just as he felt “scared to death somebody was going to find out.” Because there was nobody he could talk to about it.

Caitlyn Jenner appeared on their reality series, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” and has documented her transition on her own TV series, “I Am Cait.” Los Angeles prosecutors are still considering whether to file a criminal case against Jenner over a February traffic collision on the Pacific Coast Highway that left a woman dead. Sheriff’s investigators determined Jenner was traveling at an unsafe speed for the road conditions, and there was enough evidence to support a charge of vehicular manslaughter, the department said last month.
