Caitlyn Jenner cleared of criminal charges in fatal car crash as Los Angeles DA won’t prosecute reality star for manslaughter.

Prosecutors declined to charge Caitlyn Jenner on Wednesday in a California car crash that led to the death of another driver, saying there was not enough evidence for a conviction. The reality TV star was driving a Cadillac Escalade which was towing a trailer carrying a dune buggy on the Pacific Coast Highway, when she slammed into two other cars, according to authorities.

The decision was announced Wednesday in the 7 February collision in which authorities said Jenner’s sport utility vehicle crashed into two cars, pushing one into oncoming traffic.Though deputies believed Jenner started the chain reaction, prosecutors “based on the facts, cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the suspect’s conduct was unreasonable,” said prosecutor Patricia Wilkinson in a declination document.

Driver Kim Howe was killed when her Lexus was hit by a Hummer. “We believed from the start that a thorough and objective investigation would clear Caitlyn of any criminal wrongdoing,” said Blair Berk, Jenner’s attorney. “We are heartened the district attorney has agreed that even a misdemeanor charge would be inappropriate. Sheriff’s investigators previously determined the 65-year-old Jenner was travelling at an unsafe speed for road conditions and there was enough evidence to support a vehicular manslaughter charge. Ms Jenner was driving slightly below the speed limit and “minimally slower than the victim” and braked 1.9 to 1.5 seconds before the collision, according to a summary of the investigation released by the district attorney’s office. The case was then referred to the district attorney’s major crimes division. “It is a devastating tragedy,” the statement read. “I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time.

The tragic crash occurred before the Olympic gold medalist announced her gender transgender in an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer that aired in April. Ms Jenner rose to fame as a gold medal-winning, record-breaking athlete in the 1976 Summer Games in Montreal, before she came out as a transgender woman. The ex-husband of Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner later won the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS in July and delivered a moving speech about tolerance and acceptance with famous daughters Kendall and Kylie sitting in the audience alongside the Kardashian sisters Kim, Khloe and Kourtney.
