Bryan Singer Announced His Next Project — And It’s Not An ‘X-Men’ Movie.

After he’s finished bringing Apocalypse to Fox’s X-Men franchise, director Bryan Singer is heading underwater for his next project — 20,000 leagues under, in fact.

The filmmaker posted an Instagram pic today, which just happens to be his 50th birthday, featuring the cover page of a script for “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.” And, surprise! It’s worth remembering that between “X-Men 2: X-Men United” and the “X-Men: Days Of Future Past,” the directorial efforts of were a mixed bag. “Superman Returns” failed to give the franchise new life, opinions were divided on “Valkyrie,” and the less said about “Jack The Giant Slayer,” the better. Describing the story as both “an adventure very dear to my heart” and “a story I’ve wanted to retell since childhood,” Singer promised that the new feature will be “an epic and emotional adventure for all ages!” (Fans of the X-Men franchise can breathe easy, however; he added that he’s “not abandoning the X-Men universe.”) It’s unclear whether or not Singer will be directing the new adaptation, nor whether this version will replace one of the two competing adaptations that have been in the works at Disney and Fox for years, both running into various levels of difficulty.

The story credit is for none other than Bryan Singer. “It’s my 50th birthday (ouch), and I just put the finishing touches on the script for my next film. Fans of Singer’s vision for the X-Men shouldn’t panic: He is adamant that he is not leaving the franchise behind, but merely expanding his artistic vision to a new venture. Very excited about #xmenapocalypse and beyond. #julesverne #20000leaguesunderthesea #nemo The film will, of course, be based on the Jules Verne classic, in which the bitter, but brilliant Captain Nemo builds a submarine decades more advanced than anything in the late 19th Century seas. No word yet on what his vision might be — a contemporary redo? more explosions? — but don’t worry comic fans, Singer stresses he’s not leaving his meal ticket ‘X-Men’ franchise behind. It is unclear if Singer will direct the project, and usually has a couple of irons in the fire, but if it’s truly “dear” to his heart, he may be the one to make the Nautilus set sail once more.

That may suggest he’ll be back in the director’s chair for another X-Men movie, or it might just mean he doesn’t want to upset fans before his next one opens.
