Bad News About Bristol Palin’s Weekend Wedding to Medal of Honor Recipient Dakota Meyer.

In a Facebook post Monday, Sarah Palin announced that her 24-year-old daughter and the 26-year-old war hero would no longer be getting married this Saturday. The couple “couldn’t be more thankful for the love and support of family and friends over the past months while preparing for their wedding,” the former Alaska governor wrote. “They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held. Bristol released a statement via her mother “clearing up rumors that tabloids salivate over” (aka false reports claiming Dakota was still married to his first wife). The Dancing With the Stars alum, 24, was planning to marry Marine Dakota Meyer on Saturday, May 23, but has called off her wedding, mom Sarah Palin revealed via Facebook on Monday, May 18. Many friends and family still look forward to getting together that day in Kentucky anyway – and the Palins and Meyers are happily looking forward to still being at ‘the old Kentucky home’ on May 23 to celebrate life, in general!” It wasn’t clear whether the wedding was permanently off or merely being put on hold.

The 2008 vice presidential candidate also included a statement from her daughter in response to recent reports that Meyer was already married to another woman. “Regarding salacious headlines in recent days about ‘secret wives’, Dakota and I discussed our past relationships prior to our engagement,” Bristol’s statement said. “Dakota was legally divorced years ago, as any good reporter could and should have disclosed to readers. Meyer, a former Marine sergeant, proposed only about two months ago at a Rascal Flatts concert, and that short engagement might be why the mama grizzly posted this quote: “Trust in God’s timing. As usual, false stories and dramatically written headlines begging controversy should be disregarded, and we have faith that our privacy will be respected at this time by those with decency.” Mama Palin said that even though the wedding is off, the party will go on. He’s an American hero and patriot whose service to our country — like all his fellow Medal of Honor recipients — has been above and beyond the call of duty; but even more important is he’s a good and kind man who loves Bristol and Tripp, and is loved by them.” It’s better to wait a while and have things fall into place than to rush and have things fall apart.” Meyer, 26, was part of a pre-dawn patrol in the Afghan village of Ganjgal when two Marine platoons were ambushed by more than 50 enemy fighters firing rocket propelled grenades, mortars, and machine guns.

Meyer at the time called himself “the luckiest guy in the world,” while Palin said she was “so proud to be marrying him” and called Meyer wonderful with her son Tripp. Meyer was awarded the nation’s highest military honor in 2011 after he braved enemy fire to retrieve U.S. and Afghan troops under ambush in Afghanistan.
