Beyoncé Might Attempt an NBC Live Musical.

NBC may be reserving the part of Dorothy for an unknown — but that doesn’t mean its upcoming live production of The Wiz won’t boast some serious star power.Despite the ratings bust that was Peter Pan Live!, NBC is moving forward with its new holiday hate-watching tradition: live adaptations of beloved movie musicals.

“The Wiz Live!” is executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron third’s live musical production for NBC, following “The Sound of Music” and “Peter Pan.” This isn’t the first time Latifah has starred in a Zadan/Meron musical: She also had major roles in film adaptations of “Hairspray” and “Chicago,” the latter resulting in an Oscar nod for the star. Latifah and Blige join a cast that already includes Stephanie Mills — who played Dorothy in the original Broadway production of “The Wiz” — as Auntie Em. Latifah is playing the Wizard of Oz adaptation’s title character — “the mysterious and powerful wizard who holds the keys to the Emerald City, but whose metamorphosis from ordinary to extraordinary is itself a hoax,” according to NBC’s release. E! reports that Bey has officially been offered the role of Glinda the Good Witch, which was originally played by Dee Dee Bridgewater and later Lena Horne.

This would not be Beyoncé’s first time performing select songs from the 70s musical, which is being updated by Harvey Fierstein for modern audiences. Blige, meanwhile, gets the juicy part of the musical’s Wicked Witch of the West: Evillene, “who holds sway over the Winkies and the Winged Monkeys that do her bidding.” Mabel King of What’s Happening!! fame played the role in the 1978 film.
