‘The Wiz Live!’ now has its Wiz and Witch: Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige.

“The Wiz Live!” is executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron third’s live musical production for NBC, following “The Sound of Music” and “Peter Pan.” This isn’t the first time Latifah has starred in a Zadan/Meron musical: She also had major roles in film adaptations of “Hairspray” and “Chicago,” the latter resulting in an Oscar nod for the star.While Latifah will star as the Wiz, the mysterious and powerful wizard ruling the Emerald City, Blige will take on the role of Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West, who captures Dorothy and her friends to avenge her evil sister, Evvamean, and to get back Dorothy’s powerful silver slippers, E!Musical fans still have a few months before they have the chance to watch “The Wiz Live!” — the song-and-dance adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” — but they’re already getting an idea of what’s to come thanks to some big casting news.

Latifah and Blige join a cast that already includes Stephanie Mills — who played Dorothy in the original Broadway production of “The Wiz” — as Auntie Em. To see her play the iconic role of the Wiz and make it her own is going to be one of the joys of producing this event.” The special will mark the third installment in the network’s franchise of live musical events. While she has appeared in such movie musicals as “Rock” and “Nativity,” Blige is primarily known for her singing career, for which she has received multiple Grammys, such as the Best Contemporary R&B Album award in 2009 and Best R&B Song in 2007.

Ratings for NBC’s 2014 production, “Peter Pan Live!,” were lower and actors Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, who headlined “Pan,” may not have had the drawing power of Underwood.
