Quentin Tarantino accuses Disney of ‘extortion’ over Star Wars cinema booking.

Quentin Tarantino has accused executives at the Walt Disney company of alleged “extortionist practices” in their refusal to relinquish a cinema in Los Angeles for showings of Tarantino’s new movie, The Hateful Eight. Speaking to Howard Stern on his radio show, the Oscar-winning director explained how his modern Western was meant to open to the public at the Dome on Christmas Day and for a subsequent two-week run.

According to the controversial director, when the cinema chain told Disney they were honouring their Hateful Eight agreement, they threatened to pull The Force Awakens from all their cinemas. Tarantino says that Disney threatened the Dome’s cinema group, Arclight Cinemas, that the new Star Wars films would be pulled from all of their theatres if they didn’t renege on the agreement with Tarantino. This was further backed up by the fact tickets to the Star Wars film were available from the 19 October, but Tarantino had only recently heard about the situation.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that the Weinstein Company would have long known that it could not secure the venue, but that Tarantino was only recently informed. So we’re gonna go to the Cinerama Dome and say that they can’t honour their contract with us to show The Hateful Eight.’” Tarantino said: “As of yesterday, Disney came to the Arclight people and said ‘No. He called the move “vindictive, it’s mean, and it’s extortion”, clearly especially hurt because of the profits he had made from his past productions with Miramax, such as Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, when the studio was owned by Disney. There’s a few movies coming out around the same time… none of us are any serious competition to Star Wars.” Howard called on Disney CEO Bob Iger to “be a gracious man”, saying: “Listen, Bob, I don’t give a s**t about this theatre.

Quentin’s a weirdo – sorry Quentin. “The f**king kit, they’ve got the stupid 70mm, they’ve got all the s**t that he cares about, he just wants to show his goddamn movie there… it’s Christmas, for Christ’s sake.”
