Actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie will soon be back in the director’s seat. Netflix NFLX, -0.46% announced late Thursday that Jolie Pitt will direct and produce an original film for the service — an adaptation of the 2000 memoir “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.” Written by Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung, the memoir centers on surviving the Khmer Rouge regime, during which, nearly 2 million Cambodians died. “Films like this are hard to watch, but important to see,” Jolie Pitt said in a statement. “They are also hard to get made. Netflix is making this possible, and I am looking forward to working with them and excited that the film will reach so many people.” The film will begin production later this year, according to a news release, and will be available in Khmer and English for Netflix’s 65 million subscribers.

It’s still unclear what exactly Jolie and Brad Pitt’s eldest son will do, but a press release from Netflix reveals he will be “involved in the production of the film.” “I was deeply affected by Loung’s book,” Jolie said in the release. “It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. The film, being produced by Netflix and Pitt, will be a satirical comedy inspired by Michael Hastings’s New York Times Bestseller “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan.” The eight-episode miniseries is a prequel to the 2001 cult film “Wet Hot American Summer.” Much of the film’s stars went on to bigger things, but return for the Netflix series. Author Ung revealed her experiences of working with Jolie have been very positive. “Angelina and I met in 2001 in Cambodia, and immediately, I trusted Angelina’s heart,” Ung explained. “Through the years, we have become close friends, and my admiration for Angelina as a woman, a mother, a filmmaker, and a humanitarian has only grown.
