Amy Schumer Explains Why She’s Been “Protective” About Her ‘Trainwreck’ Character.

The 34-year-old comedienne and actress, who is nominated for her first Golden Globe for her role in Judd Apatow’s comedy film Trainwreck, talked to The Hollywood Reporter about online critiques of her work and other Internet comments about her. “With Trainwreck coming out, I was like, ‘Everyone’s going to say, ‘She’s not pretty enough to be in this movie.” And then only one dude wrote that, and people really attacked him, and then he redacted that and wanted to date me,” Schumer said in comments posted on Thursday. Writer and actress Amy Schumer discussed her film, Trainwreck, for which she has earned a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by a female in a comedy, during The Hollywood Reporter’s Writer Roundtable. Earlier this year, Hollywood Elsewhere writer Jeffrey Wells drew criticism when he commented in a review of Trainwreck that Schumer’s character is not “conventionally attractive.” That was one of his milder remarks. “She’s obviously sharp and clever and funny as far as the woe-is-me, self-deprecating thing goes, but there’s no way she’d be an object of heated romantic interest in the real world,” he wrote. “And yet that’s the apparent premise of Apatow’s film. She lamented writing a script that was so close to her personally saying, “Then you have to talk about, ‘How true is this?’ And you’re just like, ‘Who cares?’ ” “The nature of my movie … they’re just like, ‘How many dicks have you seen?’ said Schumer. “Like how many dicks have been dangling in front of you?’ ” Schumer has been vocal about how disheartening it is to be labeled a “sex-comic” as she sees no difference in the way she talks about sex in her work compared to her male counterparts. “I was very protective of the character I was playing.

Schumer’s wide facial features reminded me of a blonde Lou Costello around the time of Buck Privates, or Jennifer Aniston’s somewhat heavier, not-as-lucky sister who watches a lot of TV.” When asked about Wells’ remarks, Schumer told USA Today, “I didn’t read the thing. But, while the French fashion house has made her the belle of the ball for awards ceremony after awards ceremony, there’s one wish they just can’t grant: dressing Lawrence and her best friend comedian Amy Schumer the same. It was sort of me, if I had been suspended in [the time when] I was sort of sophomore year of college with sleeping around and drinking a lot, and I think knowing people are so quick to dismiss as a woman as, ‘Okay, so she’s a slut,’ so I was really careful with her.” Although Schumer is best known for her performances, she writes all of her own work, including her Emmy-winning Comedy Central series, Inside Amy Schumer. “I love writing,” she says, claiming, “I’m an introvert.” She says writing is, “such an escape. However, Lawrence says that she doesn’t want Schumer to win because they’re friends — she truly believes Amy’s performance is more deserving of the accolade.

A few days ago, the 25-year-old said it was her “mission” to “have Dior make two of whatever they’re making me” for the Golden Globes, where both she and Schumer are nominated in the best actress in a motion picture comedy category. That mission has now been aborted, because even Jennifer Lawrence, the world’s highest-paid actress, can’t get her way with the world’s biggest fashion house. “I mean, well, I don’t think we’ll be able to,” she said yesterday of the ‘mission’, before adding: “I don’t think Dior has a sense of humour.” Seemingly realising she may have gone too far, she quickly said: “They have a great sense of fashion!” The actress and brand’s partnership has been something of a stroke of genius.

She was signed up in 2012, just before she hit the big time thanks to her roles in The Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook, meaning she has worn Dior almost exclusively for every high-profile event over the last three years. She famously tripped over her Dior dress as she went to collect her Best Actress Oscar in 2013, saying she confused her stylist’s advice to kick the full skirt as she walked to stop her from tripping over it with ‘cake walk’.
