‘Inside Amy Schumer’ Takes On Bill Cosby Sex Scandal.

The sketch imagines a public opinion trial of the American comedian Bill Cosby, who has faced multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault over the past year.Over the course of her bloody incredible Comedy Central series ‘Inside Amy Schumer’, Amy has hit some pretty polarising topics head on, from the unfair treatment of women in the military to TV’s ridiculous notions for older actresses.

Comedian Amy Schumer put the numerous rape allegations against Bill Cosby into perspective in a blistering takedown sketch on her show Inside Amy Schumer. Schumer plays an unconventional defence lawyer, who dances across the courtroom to the theme from his hit Eighties sitcom The Cosby Show, reminding the jury how much more “fun”, and enjoyable the show was than allegations from the prosecuting lawyer. This week, Schumer takes aim at Bill Cosby in a brutal but methodically precise sketch about the legendary comic’s rape accusations spanning the last 40 years. In the sketch, Schumer defends Cosby in the court of public opinion and faces off against a prosecutor armed with mounds of facts and witness statements.

It’s a topic that doesn’t seem particularly ripe for comedy — but if there’s one comedian with a proven track record for conceiving sharp humor out of unsettling themes , it’s Amy. The scene starts with the prosecutor’s closing arguments before the focus switches to Schumer, playing the role of Cosby’s lawyer (in a very short skirt!). Last time I checked, good plus good did not equal guilty.” It was revealed last year that Cosby will not face trial for the allegations against him, due to various statute limitations. She touches upon all the shoddy defenses of Cosby we’ve feared and/or read from that terrible friend we all have from high school’s Facebook status. Dishing out pudding pops and patterned jumpers to the jury, Amy asks them if they want to wince when watching a Cosby Show re-run in the future, declaring “None of us deserve that”.

After getting the jury dancing along to her Cosby-esque dance routine, she goes on to prove that the beloved Cosby Show alum couldn’t possibly be guilty of his alleged sexual abuse, because, well, he’s Dr. Reminding us of the “high stakes” the legal system is working with, Schumer explains to a room of jury members — wearing Cosby sweaters and gulping down pudding pops she’s bribed them with — that reruns of “The Cosby Show” will forever be ruined if we convict the “beloved” comic of rape. “You may wince a little. This is about us not punishing ourselves for loving great comedy […] We deserve to watch like no-one’s raping.” Schumer has addressed the topic of high profile men facing allegations of violence against women before. A spoof of Friday Night Lights, it showed a high school football team outraged when a new coach introduces a ‘no raping’ rule, and amended the film’s famous catchphrase to “clear eyes, full heart, don’t rape”. As the jurors clamored for a frozen snack she asked them, “How could the face of such a yummy treat even do anything bad?” The sketch continues with even more uncomfortable moments, as the jury are gifted Cosby-style pullovers and chocolate cake, supposedly sent in from the controversial star himself.

She hosted the MTV Movie awards this year, and her first feature film, Trainwreck, is released later this year, directed by Girls and Bridesmaids producer Judd Apatow. Amy then ignites a courtroom chant: “Cos is great, give us chocolate cake!” Back in April, Amy revealed that the Bill Cosby parody was an extremely uncomfortable and widely discussed topic in the writers’ room. “I think we probably talked about that scene more than any other scene we’ve done,” she said during a Tribeca Film Festival panel.
