Amazon Announces New Pilots From Louis C.K., Tig Notaro and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Coming off of a slew of Emmy wins with Transparent, Amazon just announced its fall TV pilot lineup, which includes even more big names than previous years. New shows from Louis C.K., Sacha Baron Cohen, Diablo Cody, Tig Notaro and Shane Black will be included in a slate of pilots that will debut on Amazon later this fall.Amazon has announced its upcoming slate of fall TV pilots, which include a dark comedy loosely based on comedian Tig Notaro’s life, a biopic starring Christina Ricci as Zelda Fitzgerald, and a drama about an intelligence officer going undercover in the Midwest. The company announced six new shows on Wednesday, the latest collection of pilots Amazon says it’s considering turning into series for its streaming service. The company is only trotting out six pilots — that’s on the low end compared to earlier pilot seasons, where they’ve cracked double digits — but it’s compensating by working with familiar, respected forces.

The shows will be available for anyone to watch at and viewers will be able to offer feedback about which shows they’d like to be turned into full series. Juno writer Diablo Cody is also working together with comedian Tig Notaro on One Mississippi, which focuses on Notaro’s return to her childhood town in, you guessed it, Mississippi. The title character in this comedy has a circle of imaginary celebritiy friends, something that concerns his parents, who want him to get psychiatrist help. There’s also a new political thriller, Patriot, featuring Lost star Terry O’Quinn and everyone’s favorite angry gangster/father Kurtwood Smith (Robocop, That 70’s Show), and Christina Ricci is headlining a new series, Z, about Zelda Fitzgerald.

Rounding out the new lineup is Highston, a series centering on a teenager with a huge circle of (imaginary) celebrity friends, and Good Girls Revolt, a period piece that explores sexist newsrooms of 1969. While Netflix clearly has a strong head start with quality original shows, based on the quality of Transparent and last year’s shows, Amazon seems to be catching up fast.

The announcement comes soon after a former Amazon pilot, “Transparent,” won five Emmy Awards, including one for best lead actor in a comedy, for its star, Jeffrey Tambor. Notaro, the comic who won acclaim for her revealing stand-up act, “Boyish Girl Interrupted,” and was recently the subject of a Netflix documentary.

Cody, Louis C.K. and Nicole Holofcener, who directed the pilot. “Highston” is a comedy starring the newcomer Lewis Pullman as a young man whose parents (Mary Lynn Rajskub and Chris Parnell) force him into therapy. You’ll get to keep your current user name (as long as it doesn’t contain invalid characters, in which case you’ll have to go through a few extra steps to make the transfer), and all your old comments will eventually (not immediately) migrate with you. Shaquille O’Neal and Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, guest star in the pilot, which is directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (“Little Miss Sunshine”).

David Strathairn (“Good Night and Good Luck”) also stars as Zelda’s father. “Good Girls Revolt” is a period drama based on Lynn Povich’s book of the same name, about landmark sexual discrimination cases. The show is set in 1969 and stars Genevieve Angelson (“Backstrom”), Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”) and Erin Darke as news researchers “who simply ask to be treated fairly,” according to a news release.
