‘Alien’ director unveils cool new art with Sigourney Weaver back in Ripley mode.

The visionary writer-director of low-fi sci-fi landmark District 9 took to Instagram Thursday to unveil new concept art for his upcoming Alien sequel, which will see actress Sigourney Weaver reprise her iconic role as Ellen Ripley.

Neill Blomkamp is plugging away at the next entry in the Alien franchise, and today he’s taken to Twitter to share a new bit of concept art with fans featuring Ripley, Hicks, and an as yet to be determined soldier. The two characters are face-to-face with a (what we’re assuming to be) a Yutani security / military officer. “Blomkamp accompanied this photo with a simple message, stating, “…#alien going very well. Now Blomkamp has shared a piece of new Alien concept art, featuring Sigourney Weaver‘s Ripley and a scarred character obviously meant to be Michael Biehn‘s Hicks. The artwork shows Sigourney Weaver’s “Ripley” sternly talking to an armored space marine while Michael Biehn’s “Hicks” looks on, complete with a disfigured left portion of his face due to an alien acid bath towards the end of Aliens. The director originally announced his plans to do the film on Instagram earlier this year, prior to the release of his latest film Chappie, a fable about a sentient robot.

He previously had released concept drawings for an Alien project online, sparking widespread speculation that he could someday helm a new movie in the series. The film is tentatively due to arrive in 2016, and since Blomkamp said it’s “going very well,” we hope that means we won’t have to wait too much longer. During the promotion of Chappie, Blomkamp and Weaver both made clear that they wanted to make a movie that will really be connected to the first two films, by Ridley Scott and James Cameron.

Currently, no release date is set for Blomkamp’s Alien 5 however the plot for the film will take place well after the events of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and its sequel and closer to the timeline between Aliens and Alien 3.
