Alfonso Ribeiro Joins ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’ As New Host & The Carlton Dance Is The Only Way To Celebrate.

It was announced on tonight’s Dancing with the Stars finale that last season’s champion Alfonso Ribeiro will be taking over the long-running ABC series, and it’s pretty much a perfect choice.Alfonso Ribeiro, best known as Carlton Banks on the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has been named as Tom Bergeron’s replacement, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.Expect a little song and dance in between videos of groin hits, cute kids and crazy cats on “America’s Funniest Home Videos” next season. “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” alum and “Dancing With the Stars” champ Alfonso Ribeiro is taking the reins as host from Tom Bergeron next season. Ribeiro, who took home the Mirror Ball trophy in season 19 of DWTS, will lead America’s Funniest Home Videos when it returns for its 26th season this fall.

ABC’s “AFV” ranks as one of primetime TV’s most family-friendly shows and one with the highest component of multigenerational viewing, a quality that is important to ABC. Although the show is built around goofy amateur videos sent in by everyday folks, “AFV” exec producer Vin Di Bona said the host’s role is still crucial. As part of the announcement, ABC promises the upcoming season will include “an abundant supply of fresh clips to keep families laughing from coast to coast.”

Bergeron, who has served as host of the series that showcases viewer-submitted videos since 2001, announced last year that he would exit the show after season 25. Ribeiro is an amazing comedic presence, so he’s an amazingly fitting choice for AFV, and it could mean more renditions of the Carlton dance in our television future.

The show’s incoming and fifth host (Bob Saget and the tandem of Daisy Fuentes and John Fugelsang also preceded Ribeiro) says that he isn’t planning to deviate wildly from the style of Bergeron while establishing his own vibe. “It won’t be very different,” he tells EW. “It’s really about assisting the videos not trying to overpower the videos with your comedy. As the network began its search for a new television personality, Ribeiro, who had an existing relationship with the network (and with Bergeron) from his time on DWTS, stood out as a likely candidate. Ribeiro passed the first test when he assured his prospective new boss that he understood “the videos are the star of the show,” while he is the friendly tour guide. I have a high energy and a lot of creative ideas in terms of dancing and singing and maybe I’ll use some of those abilities to introduce some of our videos.

It’s the perfect time: It’s Sunday night, you’re getting ready to start your week again, you sit down, you have family dinner, you throw on AFV, and you watch it together as a family. I just love the idea when people decide to do something really stupid and then they fall and bust their head open and, of course, they don’t kill themselves — but they do it with the idea that they think it’s going to be really funny, and then they bang themselves up.
