Not only did Adele sell a record-setting 3.4 million copies of her album “25” its first week in the market, according to Nielsen Music, she’s likely selling other artists’ albums, too. At a time when overall album sales are down nearly 70% from their peak in 2000, the British singer’s whopping sales numbers mean she is touching “a lot of people that aren’t your core music buyers” and bringing them into the music sections at big-box retailers as well as to online music stores such as iTunes and Amazon’s mp3 store, says Nielsen analyst Dave Bakula. While it’s impossible to say for certain how other albums would have fared last week without the Adele hoopla, industry sales were robust at least compared with the week before.

One reason for the astronomical sales may be that Adele declined to make her album available through music-streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify, forcing listeners to buy it either digitally and at stores. Last week, the industry sold 4.3 albums not including Adele’s “25,” according to research firm BuzzAngle Music, almost as many as sold altogether during the week prior — 4.5 million – which included new releases from pop star Justin Bieber and boy-band One Direction. As of Tuesday, Adele had already sold 2.433 million albums and broke the single-week sales record, which was previously held by *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached, released in 2000. (They graciously ceded her the honor.) That number rose to 3 million as of Thursday. The only album that’s come close so far is Justin Bieber’s Purpose, which beat out One Direction’s Made In The A.M. for the No. 1 spot in last week’s charts. It debuts atop the Billboard 200 album chart this week — making it Adele’s second No. 1 album after her similarly mammoth 21, which returns to the chart’s Top 10 at No. 9 (34,000 sold).

The success of her single “Hello,” released in October, also primed the pump, inspiring myriad covers and spoofs by talk-show hosts such as Ellen DeGeneres and racking up more than 539 million views to date on YouTube. Because Adele has hardly toured since her last album, keeps a low profile on social media, hasn’t released music in four years and isn’t streaming most of her new work, fans who want to transact with the star have few options besides buying her album, music marketers say.
