Adele’s ’25’ sells 3.38 million copies, shatters records.

The British star’s release set a record for the largest single sales week for an album since Nielsen began methodically tracking weekly music sales in 1991, the company said late Saturday. After four longs year of silence from Adele, it was perhaps inevitable that third album 25 would arrive with a bang, as fans rushed to buy and download new music from the “Someone Like You” songstress. As reported by Billboard, 25 is the first album to sell more than 3 million copies in one week in Nielsen’s history, which has been tracking first week purchases since 1991.

The previous single-week sales record was held by Justin Timberlake’s boy band NSYNC and their No Strings Attached album, which sold 2.42 million albums back in 2000. Adele’s previous album, 21, sat atop the Billboard 200 list of best selling albums for 24 non-consecutive weeks and is the longest run in the top spot for a woman in the chart’s history, Nielsen said. 25 is also the biggest selling album of 2015, surpassing the 1.8 million sold by Taylor Swift’s latest effort, 1989. Adele’s Grammy-winning 2011 album 21 has been names as the greatest of all time by Billboard magazine and the soundtrack of the 1965 Julie Andrews movie The Sound of Music came in second. The album, which is not available through online streaming services — the booming sector that allows unlimited on-demand music — is led by the opening ballad Hello. At least 12 people were killed in an overnight attack blamed on Ugandan rebels in the restive east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a witness and local NGO said on Monday. “I saw four civilians killed by bullets … and seven patients and a nurse cut up by machete at the hospital,” a regional official told AFP at Eringeti, in the north of the troubled North Kivu province.

Comeback single “Hello” was watched a massive 27.7 million times in its first day of release, beating Taylor Swift’s previous record of 20.1 million for “Bad Blood” in May. A local non-governmental organisation, however, put the toll much higher, at 30 dead: 14 rebels, seven civilians, eight Congolese soldiers and one soldier with the large UN mission in the DRC, MONUSCO. As on Vevo, it took five days to reach 100 million views, but PSY still holds the speed record on YouTube with “Gentleman”, keeping “Hello” in second place. “Hello” sold 1.1 million downloads the week of 29 October, making it the first to reach one million. The rebels “attacked our positions at Eringeti and we repelled them all night,” said a Congolese army spokesman in the region, Lieutenant Mak Hazukay, declining to give any figures.

The mostly Muslim rebels, who have been active in the forested region since being driven out of their homeland in 1995, are accused of a series of killings which have claimed the lives of more than 450 civilians since October 2014. In December that year, Congolese and UN troops launched a joint operation that helped to restore a degree of calm to the region, but the killings did not stop and spread northwards to the edge of Orientale Province. She is proud owner of the ‘Big Four’ – Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year – and has 10 Grammys in total. The ADF, which first emerged in Uganda with the aim of toppling President Yoweri Museveni and setting up a hardline Islamist state, is accused of numerous serious violations of human rights.
