Adele has already sold 2.3 million copies of disc.

Adele’s independent UK label XL Recordings last week decided to withhold “25” from online streaming platforms such as Apple Inc’s Apple Music service, privately owned Spotify and Google Play. It still has another four days left in its initial tracking week, which ends on Nov. 26.) The first album to manage the feat was the Whitney Houston-led The Bodyguard soundtrack, which powered through 1,061,000 copies in its sixth week of release (week ending Jan. 3, 1993). According to figures released by the Official Charts Company, on Friday, the album registered one of the biggest first day sales totals ever in the UK with 300,000 by midnight.

The strong three-day sales indicate the lack of streaming availability did not hurt the album, which was released on Friday, and is the first since her 2011 release “21”, which won six Grammys and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Take That’s Progress notched up 518,601 sales in November 2010, and Oasis’s Be Here Now, is the record holder with 695,761 in its first chart week in August 1997. She has also sold 1.5million copies of 25 in the US, meaning she is destined to break the first-week sales record held by boyband *NSYNC, who flogged 2.42million copies of No Strings Attached in 2000. And just in case that wasn’t enough, the album is No1 in 106 out of 119 iTunes charts around the world and her previous records, 19 and 21, have both re-entered the UK Top 20.

Despite her huge success, Adele remains down-to-earth and fooled her biggest fans by undergoing a facial transformation for a sketch during her BBC special on Friday night. It is increasingly rare for an artist to top the 1 million opening week sales with a new album because fans are driven more and more to online streaming to consume music.
