Adele: Bringing families together one ‘Thanksgiving Miracle’ at a time

Adele performs ‘Hello’ on ‘Saturday Night Live’After the controversial Donald Trump-hosted episode and last week’s Elizabeth Banks-hosted rebound, Matthew McConaughey’s turn hosting the show felt decidedly downbeat. As expected, the British singer delivered stunning performances of new songs “Hello” and “When We Were Young.” It marked her first American television appearance in support of 25, which was released on Friday. There is usually no connective tissue between the sketches but instead each episode is a hodgepodge of TV spoofs, popular recurring characters and absurdist conceits. But last night’s episode felt different, with a number of the sketches focusing on the intersection where ignorance and the confidence to share one’s opinions meet.

The grabbiest non-Adele-related sketch of the night looked to get in on the Star Wars craze, with JJ Abrams making a cameo to introduce a sketch about rejected auditions for The Force Awakens. Like “Fox & Friends”, which kicked off the show with Jay Pharoah’s delightful Ben Carson impersonation, the celebrity-auditions template has been a tried and true format for SNL over the years as a pure showcase for the cast’s best impressions.

Listen below. 25 is expected to sell around 3.5 million copies in its first week, partly in thanks to the singer-songwriter removing the album from streaming services such as Spotify. Basically, the episode spent 90 minutes essentially saying the same thing: if you don’t know what you’re talking about on a subject, if you’re going on your feelings rather than on facts, it’s probably best that you just keep your mouth shut.

As for our host, Matthew McConaughey was a game participant in a pretty strong episode, and his tendency to chew the scenery fits right in on a sketch comedy show like this one. Her appeal spans age groups and genres, from children to teenagers, right through to mums and dads, uncles and aunties. “With this mammoth first day sales tally, Adele has taken a further step towards greatness. The week’s other grabby sketch was the game show “Should You Chime In On This,” a one-joke premise jumping off of the people’s need to chime in on issues when they probably shouldn’t. Over the next few days we will find out whether it can pass the magic half a million sales mark.” ’25’ features the single ‘Hello’ as well as ‘When We Were Young’. In a message posted online on the release day, Adele said she was “grateful to be able to even put another record out” and added the promoting the album around the world in recent weeks has “literally taken my breath away.” “This feels like such a long time coming, my new album is finally out.

We begin the episode with another segment from our buddies at Fox & Friends, this time discussing the Syrian refugee crisis — and getting it all wrong, as they do.
