Actress Valerie Harper hospitalized before Ogunquit Playhouse performance.

Harper was starring alongside Golden Globe nominee Sally Struthers as Millicent Winter in the musical production of Nice Work If You Can Get It, scheduled to run from July 22 to August. 15.The health of actress Valerie Harper is in dispute after Entertainment Tonight reported that she was in a coma, while other reports stated she was resting or possibly released from the hospital. “Brave, open and wants to share her love with everyone, meeting everyone after the show”, Ogunquit Playhouse artistic director Bradford Kenney told ET. A July 31 statement from the Ogunquit Playhouse reads, “There have been conflicting reports in the media regarding Valerie Harper’s condition after being admitted to the hospital Wednesday evening prior to going on stage at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

Despite the diagnosis, the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” star stayed optimistic and continued to enjoy life, participating in various projects such as “Dancing with the Stars”. She told People magazine that numerous tests showed she had leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a rare disorder in which cancer cells metastasize into the fluid-filled membrane enveloping the brain.

Two months later, Harper brought that positive attitude to the 32nd Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. After announcing her improved prognosis, Harper, known for her roles on Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda, was one of the contestants on Dancing with the Stars. On Friday, NECN’s Danielle Waugh in Maine said Harper’s husband and manager, Tony Cacciotti, had told the theatre company that the actress was “doing well.”

And in June 2014, she revealed that the cancer was “not progressing.” As fans have followed her, they watched her trials and tribulations as well. She was enthusiastic about coming to Ogunquit, and never hesitated to make the commitment, Kenney said. “We had a long dialogue to make sure it was the right thing to do,” he said.
