‘Birdman’ takes top prize for Producers Guild.

The 21st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards should offer a low-key preview to the Academy Awards and a chance for favorites to begin polishing up their acceptance speeches.LOS ANGELES (AP) – “Birdman” received a welcome lift on its flight to the Oscars after winning the Producers Guild of America’s highest film award Saturday night at a ceremony in Los Angeles.

The win delivers needed momentum to Alejandro Inarritu’s showbiz romp following its upset loss to “The Grand Budapest Hotel” in the Golden Globes’ comedy category earlier this month. PGA winners have gone on to win the Academy Award for best picture, the film industry’s highest honor, for the past seven years. “Birdman,” the first comedy from Mexican director and producer Alejandro G. You might recognize it because the ceremony always starts with charming anecdotes from stars about why they decided to become actors — it’s also the one that awards casting ensembles. Inarritu said his crew’s “only ambition was a risky and experimental kind of exploration in the cinematic land, to go through the mind of an artist with this complexity and the stressful mind of Riggan Thomson played by the incredible Michael Keaton.” “Birdman,” from Fox Searchlight Pictures, has been among the favorites in the Hollywood awards season.

Other trophies presented Saturday night included “The Lego Movie” for animated feature, “Life Itself” for documentary film, “Fargo” for television movie or miniseries, “Breaking Bad” for TV drama series, “Orange is the New Black” for TV comedy series and “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee for digital series. Notably absent from the nominees was Selma, which had been named among the year’s best films by various industry groups, including an Oscar nomination. You can also use the Watch TNT and Watch TBS apps for iOS or Android, though for that option, you must sign in with a TV service provider user name and password.

Awards experts believe voters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wanted to reward the indie film that director Richard Linklater made over 12 years with the same actors. As for TV, ABC’s “Modern Family” got lots of love, but HBO dominated per usual with noms for “Game of Thrones,” “True Detective,” “The Normal Heart” and “Boardwalk Empire.” E! is on it. In the last six years, SAG best-ensemble and Academy Award best-picture winners have lined up three times (“Argo,” ”The King’s Speech” and “Slumdog Millionaire”), while diverging just as often.
